The Beating Heart of a Thriving Community
22nd Street South & 9th Avenue South
During segregation, 22nd Street South — lovingly known as “The Deuces” — became a hub of Black excellence, creativity, and commerce. The corridor bustled with the sounds of jazz and gospel, the aroma of BBQ from corner joints, and the rhythm of checker games and storytelling under New Orleans-style porches. It was a place where neighbors gathered in church finery and businesses flourished. At its peak in the early 1960s, The Deuces was home to hundreds of Black-owned enterprises and a deeply rooted sense of pride.
Cradle to Grave — and Everything In Between
In 1962, life on The Deuces offered everything a community needed, all within walking distance. You could grab a shoeshine at Cozy Inn, eat lunch at The Shag, and get a fresh cut from Oscar Kleckley. You’d stop by your lawyer’s office, shop for groceries at Barco’s, and visit Dr. Ayer for a check-up.
And if needed, funeral arrangements could be made at Arch-Royal — all on the same vibrant strip.

Reviving a Legacy, Reimagining the Future
In 2012 — fifty years later — the spark of revitalization began. Today, The Deuces Live, Inc. is breathing life back into this historic corridor. Our dream is to create a world-class destination rooted in legacy, culture, and community — blending old-world charm with bold new ideas. The Deuces isn’t just history — it’s a movement in motion.
